At Hicks Elementary School, there’s one student whose kindness and positivity stand out. Fifth grader Londyn Del Bosque walks younger students to class and comforts classmates when they are upset.

Teacher Steven Cueva has worked at Hicks Elementary School for two years. When he came to the school, he immediately knew Londyn was special, Cueva said.

“Everyone just flocked around her,” Cueva said. “I’m very privileged to be her teacher.”

Local dignitaries including Corpus Christi Mayor Paulette Guajardo stopped by Hicks Elementary School to recognize Londyn for her acts of kindness on May 2.

During a schoolwide assembly, Londyn was named the “Kindest Kid in America” for the day and presented with flowers, a medal and a picture book describing her positive behavior.

“I love to be kind,” Londyn said during the event.

The Kindest Kid in America organization recognizes children across the country to promote kindness. Londyn was nominated by her school.

Kindest Kid in America Director Jessie Hansen visited the school for Londyn’s recognition assembly and shared a message with students about how both kindness and hate exist in a cycle, with actions inspiring reactions. Children can choose what impact they want to have on others, Hansen said.

Hansen challenged the children to each complete 25 acts of kindness in a week.

“It’s not just about the kid getting the award,” Hansen said. “It is so important that people know it’s about all of these kids being inspired.”

Londyn’s teachers agree that she is a great example of this.

Londyn has Down syndrome and is a part of the special education program at school, but her impact reaches across campus.

“She’s like the leader, like the big sister, in our classroom and amongst her peers in the general education population,” Cueva said.

Teaching aides Kalynn Gomez and Patty Vera assist in the classroom.

At school, Londyn follows directions, does her work and helps other students as well. It’s typical for Londyn to help other students with their backpacks, Cueva said.

“She always helps the kids, taking them to the classroom or holding their hand if they need to transfer to another (area),” Gomez said.

Vera said that Londyn is sassy and a great friend to everyone. She loves singing and dancing, Cueva and Gomez said.

“She’s always looking out for someone,” Vera said. “If they fall or are crying, she’s there to help.”

Londyn was presented with a children’s book about her acts of kindness. The story was written by a local teenager, Leilani Flores.

Flores is a seventh grader at Miller Metropolitan Preparatory School of Design. Flores said that it was “beautiful” to learn about Londyn.

“She is amazing,” Flores said.

At home, Londyn is always happy, parents Celeste and Christian Del Bosque said.

“She loves everybody,” Celeste Del Bosque said. “Whenever somebody’s having a bad day in the house, she can sense it. She puts her feelings aside and tries to make them feel better.”
